HBO’s “Looking” debuted a year ago and the gay male themed relationship comedy/drama instantly polarized its audience. It was one of those “water cooler” shows that created a lot of dialogue about how television treats gay characters and gay stories. While many loved the series from the get go, many others gave the first 8 episode season mixed marks and criticized the show for a rough beginning. Meanwhile, some queer people of color weren’t satisfied at the diversity of the show, while others pointed out that a cast that contained two major Latino characters and a major supporting role for an mixed race Anglo/African actor is more diverse than most shows currently on the air.
All those conversations and strong enough ratings led HBO to give the show a second season of 10 episodes which will premiere this coming Sunday, January 11, 2015 at 10 pm. All three lead actors return for the second season: Jonathan Groff, Frankie J. Álvarez, and Murray Bartlett and semi-regulars, Raúl Castillo, Lauren Weedman, and Russell Tovey were promoted to regulars. It also appears that both O.T. Fagbenle and Scott Bakula will return to wrap up their respective plot lines from last season.
