It’s a huge hit…Seattle Art Museum’s currently running exhibit, Deco Japan: Shaping Art and Culture, 1920-1945 at the Seattle Asian Art Museum in Volunteer Park. It examines the huge impact that the Art Deco movement had on art, design and the culture of Imperialistic Japan from the 1920s through the end of World War II. The museum and Volunteer Park will host a special free program Friday evening, July 25 with events in the museum and outside in the park. It’s a free event and family friendly.

DETAILS: Hosted by the Gardner Center for Asian Art and Ideas, Deco Night includes lectures, special tours of the exhibition, outdoor Deco-era music and more. Concluding the evening will be the silent film, The Lady and the Beard (Shukujo to hige).
Located in Volunteer Park, the Asian Art Museum’s Art Deco building, designed by Carl F. Gould in the early 1930s, serves as a fitting backdrop for this exhibition. Its ornamental aluminum metalwork, organic motifs, and stylized architectural details exemplify the time in which the artworks were created.
Tickets are required for the exhibition viewing and guest lecture. Admission is free for the outdoor program.

6:30–8:30 pm: Short tours of the exhibition, the museum’s Deco architecture, and the park design, plus light refreshments.
7 pm: Textile artist Yoshiko Iwamoto Wada speaks on Japanese Deco textiles and fashion.
Outdoor Music and Film
Volunteer Park Amphitheater
8:30–10:30 pm: A short selection of Deco-era music from Japan and the U.S. is followed by the silent film The Lady and the Beard. The Aono Jikken Ensemble performs their original score to accompany the film, with live benshi narration (English and Japanese).
Film: The Lady and the Beard (Shukujo to hige) Directed by Yasujiro Ozu, 1931, silent, 75 min. A traditional kendo practitioner becomes interesting to a cosmopolitan young woman once he shaves off his beard in this classic comedy
