Nellie Andreeva at Deadline Hollywood has the scoop: NBC is developing a TV pilot called “My Best Friend is a Lesbo”.
The project, from Warner Bros TV and Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s studio-based Fake Empire, is about two best female friends — one straight, the other gay — who become roommates and help each other navigate life, love, and dating in Los Angeles. The semi-autobiographical comedy is based on the real-life friendship of writers and longtime roommates Sascha Rothchild and Randi Barnes, who will co-pen the script together.
There have been a few lesbians in TV comedy…Ellen of course, and Ross’s former wife on “Friends” but it’s been awhile since the Lady Loving Ladies have featured so predominately in a sitcom. More recent hits, “Will & Grace” and “Modern Family” have featured Men Loving Men so it’s nice the Ladies are getting some love.
But, what about that title? Ick or Yay? I don’t see that title making it to air, if the project goes that far, (and remember, this is a developing project meaning it’s been given the green light to write a pilot…it might not actually be filmed or make it to series). “Lesbo” does rub some people the wrong way…
Maybe we’ll develop a web based show with L.A. Kendall and Tony Burns and call it, “My Best Friend Wants To Go To Lezbro”… (And, by the way, September’s “Lezbro” is coming up this Friday night at The Wildrose with Lili Delight & EmpeROAR Fabulous!!! starting at 9pm…cover is only $5 and awesome drink specials.)
