October is our FAVORITE time of year…fall is always deliciously cool and crisp as the leaves change color PLUS it’s also a terrific time for film lovers with about 439 film festivals going on including the Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival which kicked off its 18th annual party with Thursday night’s gala opening night film of I AM DIVINE which played to a Cinerama packed house full of fans of the iconic drag star, Divine.
The festival has moved to Capitol Hill for screenings from Friday the 11th through next Thursday, the 17th and you can visit Northwest Film Forum and Harvard Exit for all this week’s screenings before the festival finishes up next weekend at Pacific Place Cinemas. Tickets and passes for films and events available over HERE!
For Friday, October 11, you can check out TWO sets of shorts programs…BOLD IS BEAUTIFUL which features short pieces about some very interesting personalities, including HEKLINA starring the one and only drag diva from San Francisco, and MARK MITCHELL, about Seattle’s own acclaimed fashion designer and artist. BOLD IS BEAUTIFUL screens at 5:45 pm at NW Film Forum and the other shorts package, Infrared IV: New Visions From the Queer Avant-Garde featuring some very….interesting experiments in film will screen at the same venue at 9:45 pm.
The feature film we’re gonna recommend for Friday night is solely based on its title…we haven’t seen it. But, WHO’S AFRAID OF VAGINA WOLF? is such a terrific title, how could we not give it a “thumbs up” ? And, despite the fact SGN photographer Nate Gowdy disapproves of extensive block quoting, here’s some skinny about VAGINA WOLF:
Single and hapless, Anna is an aspiring filmmaker living in her friend’s garage. The day after her 40th birthday, Anna plans to change everything with her lesbian remake of WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?, devised to win the affections of Katia (Janina Gavankar, The L Word), her beautiful leading lady, costar, and crush. Unfortunately, things don’t run smoothly: egos clash and crewmembers are hooking up left and right. Will Anna go yet another year without accomplishing any of her resolutions? This hysterical behind-the-scenes comedy features a sexy, funny cast including GO FISH’s Guinevere Turner and True Blood’s Carrie Preston.
Co-Presented by The Lesbians Over 40 Group.
VAGINA WOLF screens at 7:15 pm at the Harvard Exit.
If you’re looking for SLGFF parties to attend, you have two options for Friday…there’s HAPPY HOUR at PURR between 6pm and 8pm, a pre-func for the screening of TEST, the AIDS themed dance drama which screens at NWFF at 7:30 pm.
But, the biggie event is the TRANNYSHACK “KNOCK OFF” event over at Pony…a regular TRANNYSHACK SEATTLE event was SUPPOSED to have happened at Re-bar. but there was a double booking so the ‘shack got scaled down and moved to the adorable, but not ideally suited for live drag performances, PONY. It’s supposed to happen at 11pm but if you want to get in and see anything, we advise you to show up by 1opm and don’t MOVE from your spot…it will be packed. Heklina, Grace Towers and Turleen are all up from San Francisco for the event, plus local gals like Jackie Hell, Honey Bucket and Sylvia O’Stayformore. (We’re having a hard time imagining a classy lady like Sylvia writhing away on the booze soaked bar at Pony, but a gals gotta do what a gals gotta do to earn a whisky soaked buck…)
