In a day of firsts, one of the biggest is the winner of the 59th edition of Eurovision, the annual song/performance contest that is a VERY big deal in Europe and throughout the world…this year the trophy goes to: “Conchita Wurst” the drag queen alter ego of Austrian Thomas Neuwirth, the 25 year old singer who won with the power ballad, “Rise Like A Phoenix”. Neuwirth/Wurst joins a list of previous winners that include Celine Dion and ABBA but is the first winner to wear a beaded evening gown and a neatly trimmed beard.
From all reports we’ve seen, it appears Neuwirth is a gay man who performs in drag and only uses feminine pronouns while in character as Conchita. The singer’s selection as Austria’s representative in the 2014 Eurovision stirred controversy across Europe with the conservative Eastern European nations and former Soviet bloc protesting the loudest, with Belarus threatening to edit Conchita out of their nation’s telecast.
Conchita’s win is the second for Austria, who previously grabbed the trophy back in 1966. Coming in second was The Common Linnets from the Netherlands with Swedish singer Sanna Nielsen placing third. Austria’s win this year means it will host the 2015 Eurovision.
So, bravo to Conchita Wurst and Thomas Neuwirth!
We must also note that Conchita bears a striking resemblance to our own LadyDude, Dita St. Sur Bete. There’s a slim chance that they could be related…Dita’s paternal heritage IS German. Maybe they are entwined in the same Deutschy family tree!
WUNDERBAR, MEIN LIEBLINGS!!!
