Gender Justice League Organizes “Say My Name:Name and Gender Marker Change Clinic”

December 14, 2016• byMichael Strangeways

While it’s uncertain times for everyone right now due to the impending horror of The Illegitimate Regime of Donald Trump, it’s even more worrisome for community members most at risk. The “L” and the “G” and the “B” of LGBT definitely have causes for concern under Herr Drumpf and his Swampy Bag of Horrifying Deplorables but members of the Transgender community are very concerned what life could be like under a very restrictive and biased administration. Trans members of the Queer community have fought for and won victories in recent years but there’s still much to be done. And, in less progressive parts of the country, life as a trans person can be especially tough to navigate.

There’s even concern here in the bluest of the blue states, Washington State. Will it be more difficult for trans people to legally change their name or gender markers on vital identification documents like Driver’s Licenses, Birth Certificates, Social Security cards and Passports? Even under the best of circumstances, making changes to these legal documents is a confusing and daunting labyrinth of bureaucracy and paper work but under the upcoming Ministry of Misery it could be an even greater challenge.

To alleviate some of the potential horror, Seattle’s GENDER JUSTICE LEAGUE has teamed up with Q-LAW LEGAL FOUNDATION and other community groups and businesses to stage a series of legal clinics to help members of the transgender community deal with the procedures of name and gender marker changes. Say My Name:Name and Gender Marker Change Clinic is happening this upcoming Sunday, December 18, 2016 from 1 pm to 4 pm at The Agnes Underground meeting space, lower level in the Agnes Building at the corner of Pike and 12th on Capitol Hill.  Below is all the info you need including a link to RSVP to attend and contact info for any questions.

Gender Justice League, Q-Law Legal Foundation, Teller & Associates, Agnes Underground, U.T.O.P.I.A. & King County Bar Association will be holding a name and gender marker change legal clinic.

PLEASE RSVP: https://goo.gl/forms/c6DOp6EVTCpXS3z32

This clinic will be a “one-stop shop” including volunteer attorneys who can help you fill out and understand forms, medical providers who can consult to write same-day letters at no cost for gender marker changes, and for folks who meet income guidelines to receive financial assistance to file your name or gender marker changes.

This event is coming together quickly – PLEASE CHECK THIS EVENT FREQUENTLY as we work out details & what paperwork you will need to bring with you.

We will be assisting with:
Name Changes in King County
Driver’s License Name & Gender Marker changes
Social Security Name and Gender Marker Changes

A semi-proud Midwesterner by birth, he's lived in Seattle since 2000. He's also a film producer who would like you to check out the Jinkx Monsoon documentary, "Drag Becomes Him" now available on Amazon.com. In his spare time, he gets slightly obsessive about his love for old movies, challenging theater, "otters", vodka, chocolate, "I,Claudius", Lizzie Borden, real books made out of paper, disaster films, show tunes, Weimar era Germany, flea markets, pop surrealistic art, the sex lives of Hollywood actors both living and dead, kitties, chicken fried steak, haute couture and David Bowie. But, not necessarily in that order.
