The auteur filmmaker, Travis Mathews, has been in the news lately, due to the release of his latest feature “Interior: Leather Bar” – a collaboration with that “honorary homosexual”, James Franco. I, for one, can’t wait to see Mathews’ take on “Cruising”. Not because of all the controversy (the film was recently banned in Australia) or hardcore sex scenes (of which I hope there’s a lot), but because Mathews is one of the few truly refreshing voices in the contemporary “queer” cinema. Mathews is a thoughtful, original artist, which is an anomaly at gay and lesbian film festivals these days. His “I Want Your Love” was by far my favorite feature at the Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival 2012. While visiting San Francisco last year, I recorded this brief interview with Mathews: https://vimeo.com/
Editor’s Note: Mr. Mathews refers to his film project with James Franco as “James Franco’s 40 Minutes” which was the original name of the film that eventually became, “Interior. Leather Bar”. This interview was recorded in November of 2012 before the name change. And, we’re also guessing it’s highly likely that “Interior: Leather Bar” will screen at SIFF and/or the Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival this year. Stay tuned for more info. MS
