SAM Remix Is Friday And Anthony Perkins Is The Subject Of This Month’s Cinema Offering

Psycho star and deeply closeted actor Anthony Perkins is the subject of SAM’s Gay Pride Film Series this month.

It’s been awhile since we checked in on Seattle Art Museum’s excellent and fun quarterly party night, REMIX…which is a shame, because it IS a hell of a lot of fun. The next Remix is happening this coming Friday, June 7 from 8pm to midnight at SAM Downtown and in addition to checking out the current exhibit,  The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States, you can also enjoy DJ Riz Rollins and all the other entertainment on tap:

The night’s activities include:

• DJ Riz spins soul, pop, hip hop, and more to keep you movin’ all night long.
• The dynamic choreography of Seattle’s Alchemy Tap Project, ranging from jazz to electronic and hip hop—styles as diverse as SAM’s collections
• Stop by the Rec Room to play a collection of games, including a giant game of Twister, group Pictionary and Modern Art Bingo.
• Make small edition trading cards with artist Janet Fagan.
• Design jewelry rooted in clean forms of color and shape inspired by the Minimalist works in Fifty Works for Fifty States with artist Terri Rau.
• Get down to dj100proof’s distinctive blend of funk, hip-hop, boogie and R&B.
• Put your artistic eye to the test in a photo scavenger hunt in SAM’s collections for a chance to win free tickets to upcoming exhibition Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion.
• Grab a free Remix tote and build a collection of art created with an array of local artists in booths at the Mini Fair. Created with Seattle artist Joey Veltkamp, featuring Maikoiyo Alley-Barnes, Sharon Arnold, Nola Avienne, the Bureau of Drawers, Celeste Cooning, Chris Crites, Ronald Hall, Harold Hollingsworth, Sean Johnson, Izzie Klingels, Kristen Ramirez, Susan Robb, Joey Veltkamp and Tariqa Waters.
• Seattle Opera BRAVO! Club presents: Bass-Baritone Danny Oakden and pianist Elisabeth Ellis perform live in the galleries. In minimalist style, this performance celebrates the essence of operatic form – the power of the human voice.
• SAM Performs: Modern dance by Salt Horse live in the galleries
• Experience the galleries in new and unexpected ways with highly opinionated tours led by neon artistDylan Neuwirth, arts writer and goer Jeremy Buben, New York artist Heather Hart, Executive Director of Photo Center Northwest Michelle Dunn Marsh, Arts Corps Program Director Lara Davis, founder of M.I.A. Gallery Mariane Lenhardt, and SAM Modern & Contemporary Curatorial Assistant Carrie Dedon!

You can also grab tickets to SAM’s upcoming tribute to actor Anthony Perkins, this year’s “Gay Pride Cinema” subject. Perkins was best known as the original Norman Bates in Hitchcock’s “Psycho” and the sensitive, moody actor was firmly trapped in Hollywood’s celluloid closet for his entire career, despite a not very discreet relationship with fellow actor Tab Hunter. SAM will be screening two films starring Perkins: the chilling thriller “Pretty Poison” on June 14, and the film adaptation of Joan Didion’s “Play It As It Lays” on June 21. Both films screen in SAM’s Plestcheeff Audiotorium. Tickets for both films are $15 for the public and $13 for members of SAM, SIFF, NWFF, The Film School and Three Dollar Bill Cinema.

We’re also looking forward to SAM’s next big exhibit: FUTURE BEAUTY: 30 YEARS OF JAPANESE FASHION which opens June 27 (and runs through September 8):

Eighty gowns will be featured, ranging from the classic to the outrageous, by celebrated designers such as Rei Kawakubo, Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake, Kenzo Takada, Junya Watanabe, Jun Takahashi and others, videos of runway shows, artist photographs, magazines and ephemera designed by renowned international artists like Gilbert and George and Cindy Sherman. This exhibition promises to be a fascinating experience and rare opportunity to view these unique creations firsthand.

For fashion nerds, it is a must see.
