Untucked with Brian: R.P.D.R. Episode 1 & 2

January 27, 2011• bySeattle Gay Scene

Christmas Glitz and Glam, only a month late!

The 3rd season of RuPaul’s Drag Race premiered Monday night and the show is already a season (starting off that way, anyway) full of surprises, glitz and glamor! Fierce bitchas and exquisitely delicious “crew pit boys” stepping up to the plate to offer the viewer a sense of hope for humanity. First we learn of something that (to many) was a complete shocker and nothing of this nature is something that anyone saw coming. At the start of the episode, RuPaul surprises the contestants by bringing out a big present (which was rolled onto the set by the gorgeous pit crew) and out pops Shangela (contestant from Season Two, who was the second queen to “sash-ay away”)! How many lives does this queen have and what is she looking to gain by being a contestant again?

The Queens create a new costume creation (from scratch) by shopping at a thrift store in “Day Drag” and return to the workroom and begin the construction. During which, Mimi Imfurst has a dramatic mental breakdown, and on the FIRST episode? Really? Come on! And (supposedly) Venus D-Lite stole an idea from Phoenix to crush christmas balls and super glue them to her jacket. It’s a competition, girly-boys, all rules are out the window and the open road is free to roam.

Let’s talk about a DRAMA-Queen: Mimi Imfurst! Did anyone else feel like she was putting on a show with her melodramatic crying session for not being on top of her game with her Christmas Couture outfit? (I guess there needs to be one high maintenance queen in each season). Seriously! Use those balls that you have tucked and figure it out. Mariah Paris seems to have her motherly instincts built in the right way, stepping in to guide her fellow sister and reinstate Mimi’s sanity.

In the elimination round, Venus D Lite and Shangela had to lip-sync for their lives with Venus D Lite being sent home and Shangela given another chance to redeem herself. So many were upset that Venus got sent home like that, and I would have to agree with them. I felt (and still feel) like Venus brought so much more to the table than Shangela (and what the frock is she doing there?).

Next week, the Queens transform and transport themselves to outer space. What will the show morph into this season? You can only find out by getting up to The Lobby Bar for the OFFICIAL RuPaul Drag Race viewing party with all the Absolut drink specials and no cover every Monday night!
