Girl4Girl Productions is finally on the hill every third Friday at the Fabulous and Seductive Century Ballroom. That’s right ladies: two levels, three bars with sexy and seductive written all over the place. DJ L.A. Kendall will be on stage along with Fuchsia FoXXX, and the G4G GoGo’s Glam It Up for your party pleasures. Join the incisive Girl4Girl party for their Opening Night celebration! They have planned for this event for twelve years to be at this location and your presence is a must! And with a $10 cover ($12 after 11pm), the doors open at 9pm (21+ only and make sure to bring your ID!). We got the down and dirty with DJ L.A. Kendall about this move and what to expect at this all women dance party. (Note: This event is in addition to their monthly Club Sur event, Playgirl, which happens TOMORROW, Saturday, February 12!)
Seattle Gay Scene: DJ L.A. Kendall, thank you for talking with us. Tell me, who are you and where do you originally hail from?
L.A. Kendall: Thanks for having me! I was actually born in Olympia, raised in Tucson, Arizona, and moved to Seattle at the age of 21. There were two reasons I moved to Seattle: 1) I had just come out, and really wanted to be in a city atmosphere (read: WHERE THE GIRLS ARE), and 2) I had enrolled at The Art Institute in their Music Video Business program (or so it was called at the time). Seattle was booming big time where music is concerned. This was pre Kurt Cobain’s death. There were TONS of young, music-industry interested folk converging upon Seattle at the time and I was one of them. I ended up working at Seattle’s only Lesbian dance club at the time, The Easy (which was where Lobby Bar is now). I started as a Janitor, worked my way up through the chain – door, bar back, bartender, and manager. I was there for 4 years and was involved in a major remodel and renovation that split the bar into two separate spaces. Restaurant on one side, and dance club on the other. I ended up booking and managing the club side, which is where I first got my experience DJing and producing parties. From there I’ve embarked on a career that has included DJ, Vocalist, Tour Manager, Event Producer, Talent Manager, Booker, Writer, Marketing Consultant, Public Relations, and anything else to make a dime! For real yo! I feel lucky enough to have worked on some amazing projects, with some of Seattle’s finest artists over the last, wow, more than a decade now. Currently I am a partner in Qulture Qreative. We produce events and work on a lot of creative projects from big brand to guerilla street. We recently produced Gay Pride Weekend for The Ace Hotel in Palm Springs, and I just started working on year 4 of producing the DJ Stage at the Gay Pride Festival at Seattle Center. We also put out the queer zine, Hard Times Press (Next Issue due out March 16th)! I am also the resident DJ and perform at Choice Wednesdays at Havana, Girl4Girl Productions, and Lezbro at Wildrose.
“If you make a mistake, at least let it be a new one”.
That would have covered a whole lot of ground for me, and probably saved me from a whole lot of heartache! However, I was a stubborn teen who thought I knew it all (shocker), so I probably would not have listened. Hopefully I can pass that advice down to my kid when he is 16, and he’ll get something from it! Fingers crossed!
SGS: Let’s say I give you a pink elephant. What would you do with it exactly?
L.A. Kendall: Get a car wash?
