Hello my theater readers and enthusiasts who delve your fingertips in queer theater. This spring I’m stage managing a wonderful theater production in Capitol Hill and you simply need to be as excited as I am. Women in Peril is the next late night show going up at Annex Theatre – April 29th through May 20th on Fridays and Saturdays (11pm curtain) at the Annex Theatre’s second floor space in Capitol Hill. In the coming weeks you’ll get the exclusive interviews with the writers and actors of this new work of live theater, including the director: Jason Sharp. I will be reporting you on the progress with a picture diary with incrementation evidence of the unusual and unseen. This is going to be a blast and you’re going to enjoy the ride, but only if you take it with me.
Itʼs a lazy critical slam: “It was like a Lifetime Movie.” Women in Peril wears that like a badge of honor. Bad Actor Productions brings their campy nonsense to bear on the trashy world of 1990s Lifetime Movies of the Week—the kind we watched with our moms!—feeding the movies of Judith Light, Tori Spelling, and Meredith Baxter-Birney into a gender-bending blender. Can the heroines overcome their stalker/eating disorder/disease of the week in time to save their cheerleader daughter/heartbroken ex-obsessed student from death, a coma or drag overdose? Find out in the Spring when Annex Theatre hosts Bad Actors Productions! Directed by Jason Sharp (who played a superhero in Annexʼs production of Alecto, Issue #1).
But you don’t have to wait until the spring to get your Joan Crawford fix. On February 26th at the SIFF Cinema you can catch a Mommie Dearest Quote Along:
Joan Crawford and Faye Dunaway are two certified screen legends, but combine them and you get an over-the-top version of reality that is both jaw-droppingly bad and totally triumphant at the same time! To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the most notorious bio-pic of them all, we’re presenting Mommie Dearest the way it was meant to be seen: with a crowd of enthusiastic fans all yelling “No…wire…hangers…EVER!” in unison. For this special screening we’ll have subtitles for all your favorite lines and free wire hangers to wave at the screen. Come in costume and participate in our pre-show Joan Crawford drama queen contest and win fabulous prizes.
This special engagement viewing is only $12 and it will be well worth the trip.
