We already blabbed about this weekend’s upcoming Emerald City Comicon at the Washington State Convention Center which starts this Friday, March 4 but primarily focused on the STARS in attendance, like Big Bill Shatner and the fangalicious James “Spike” Marsters. But, you need to know that comics are also pretty Gay…and Lesbian…and Bisexual, and Trans, and Queer in general. I mean, it only makes sense…hotties in tights and zexy aliens with bizarre appendages; who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?
And, Emerald City Comicon DOES have a major LGBTQ presence with the participation of the folks from Prism Comics, the non-profit org/website that supports queer comic book artists, characters, books, plot lines and fans. Prism will have a big booth at the convention and they’ll host a number of very special guests, including:
Special guests this year include Jeff Krell, creator of the groundbreaking gay comic strip Jayson, Jon Macy, author of the graphic novel Teleny and Camille and Queer Press Grant recipient for his fantasy series Fearful Hunter, Sean-Z, creator of the erotic fantasy series Myth and comics fandom website Fanboys of the Universe.
In addition, Prism hosts the LGBT Comics Panel at 6pm on Friday, March 4 with the added participation of David Kelly (Rainy Day Recess: The Complete Steven’s Comics), Erika Moen (DAR!), Jeff Krell, Jon Macy, Sean-Z and Stephen Sadowski (Warlord of Mars, JSA) and moderated by Charles “Zan” Christensen (President of Prism Comics and Publisher of Northwest Press).
And, if you can’t actually make it to the Convention Center for Comicon, you can still show your support of queer comics by partying with Prism at two big events outside the convention. Friday night at 8pm, Prism will host an After Party event at Pony, 1221 East Madison, that will feature t-shirts, comics and graphic novel door prizes donated by Northwest Press, Ed Luce (Wuvable Oaf) and Paige Braddock (Jane’s World). The event is FREE (No cover) and obviously, 21+.
Finally, Emerald City Comicon wraps up on Sunday, March 6 and Prism will host a “Big Gay Farewell Dinner” at The Local Vine, 1410 12th Avenue from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. (Please RSVP if you wish to attend this event; they need a head count for the reservation.)
Hopefully, at some point during the weekend, there should be some sightings of fans dressed up in superhero Spandex…if you see any, send me PHOTOS!!!!
