The bigots filed paperwork yesterday for “Referendum 74” which would rescind the Marriage Equality Law signed into approval by Governor Christine Gregoire yesterday, which made Washington State the 7th state to achieve marriage equality in the US. (Note, that due to a clerical error, the referendum was originally titled “Referendum 73” which had already been used for a prior piece of proposed legislation; the numbering was changed earlier today.) Joseph Backholm, the director of the Family Policy Institute of Washington, aka “Focus on the Family” made the filing hours after Gov. Gregoire signed the Marriage Equality Bill into law at the Capitol yesterday. Anti-Marriage Equality advocates have pledged to spend $2 million to $6 million on the campaign to defeat marriage equality in the state. They have until June 6, 2012 to gather 120,577 signatures to get the referendum on the November ballot.
It’s highly likely they can achieve that goal so it’s important to keep fighting for Marriage Equality. Achieving the ultimate victory will require huge amounts of support, hard work and MONEY. If you haven’t already done so, go to the Washington United for Marriage website and pledge your support, both emotionally and financially. If you’re on Facebook, go “Like” the new page “Approve Referendum 74”. Get the word out to everyone you know that they need to vote YES on Referendum 74…the wording on the referendum is the exact wording in the bill signed into law yesterday; it asks Washington voters to APPROVE marriage equality in the state.
