AIDS Candlelight Memorial Is Sunday…And, What’s Happened To The Abbey Of St. Joan?

May 16, 2013• bySeattle Gay Scene

AIDSCandlelight2013

It’s the 30th anniversary of the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial this coming Sunday, May 19, 2013 at 5pm at Seattle Central Community College on Capitol Hill. The annual event pays tribute to those lost to HIV/AIDS over the last thirty years as well as raises awareness that HIV/AIDS is still with us, as over 30 million people worldwide still battle the disease. Recent breakthroughs in treatment and prevention have raised hope that the end of the tunnel is within sight, but until that finally happens, the public needs to continue being aware of the need to continue the fight.

This year’s Memorial is sponsored by the new advocacy group, SOSEA, aka “Social Outreach Seattle”, the group best known for their many underwear and fashion events/fundraisers at Neighbours. In years past, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence-The Abbey of St. Joan have been the community organizers for the event which raises the question: “What’s going on with the Sisters?” The group has been very quiet for the last few months, with fewer events and a much reduced presence on the Hill. Their website has not been updated for months, and there’s not a lot going on with their social media. Is the Seattle chapter of the Sisters on a break, or do they desperately need some new blood?

Inquiring minds want to know…The Sisters have been a vital part of our community for decades. We want them to thrive!

As for the Candlelight Memorial, it’s happening at Seattle Central on the corner of Broadway & Pine Street next to Broadway Performance Hall in the plaza/grassy area. The invite doesn’t say so, but in years past, you’ve been encouraged to bring your own candle.

We’re also confused why this is being held at 5pm since it’s still daylight then and candlelight isn’t going to make much of an impact…shouldn’t this happen at dusk? Just sayin’…

Regardless, you should either support this important day by attending this event and/or donating money to a group such as Lifelong AIDS Alliance, Rosehedge/Multifaith Works, or Gay City Health Project.

For more info on the International event, go to the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial website.
