“Up where they walk, up where they run, up where they stay all day in theeee suuuuunnnn…”~The Little Mermaid
Welp! None of that, please and thank you! No need to pine for a landlubbing prince by combing your hair with a fork. Live out all your *real* mermaid fantasies (non-xxx) dressed as a swimming siren at Alki Beach for the West Seattle Mermaid Parade, Saturday the 30th at 11am.
Those in costume can meet at the Alki Bath House at 11am for some harp music accompanying live belly dancing provided by Leslie Rosen and Monica Shley. Parade will start at noon from the Bath House and continue along the Alki Beach Trail to the giant anchor at the site of the former Luna Park. Those not in costume, spectators, or mermaid-finding cryptozoologicists may watch along the route. It’s all about the art—not for people to sell their finely-crafted seashell bras.
This is a female-centric, family friendly event. Says the Facebook page: “The mermaid parade is the proud recipient of an art grant from Ignition Northwest (501c) for NEW interactive, community-driven, collaborative works that are accessible to the public and participatory in scope. Fueling community through participatory arts, events and education, and a matching funds grant from the City of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods.”
The weather report for Alki this weekend is looking GORGEOUS, so break out the sandals (no socks please), your best mermaid costume, and some beach gear! And hey, props if you find Cher or Ariel. *wink*
