Eric Lane Barnes is a familiar face to fans of the Seattle Men’s Chorus. He’s been the Associate Artistic Director at parent organization Flying House Productions since 2000 as well as the creator and director of the smaller performance group Captain Smartypants. Eric’s front and center at all SMC events and writes many of the original songs and parodies done by the musical groups under the Flying House umbrella.
But, like most artists, he also has other things to get off his chest artistically and not all expressions of creativity are best suited to be performed by 400 gay men in matching outfits. In many cases, artistic expression is so personal it’s best performed by the creator themselves. Eric Lane Barnes does have something to express and the result is his new theater piece, Is It Just Me? which debuted last weekend at The Pocket Theater in north Seattle and continues tonight and tomorrow, August 7 and 8, both shows at 10 pm.
Eric’s show follows “one man’s journey from closeted Pentecostal Bible-thumper to atheist rainbow flag-waver” in revue format that combines song, dance and monologue and naturally features original music and songs by Eric written over the years as “a bizarre child, teenage zealot, young alcoholic adult and professional homosexual.”
This truly is the autobiographical show that asks the $25,000 musical question: “Does anyone else here think this God character is make-believe or is it just me?”
Starring Eric Lane Barnes with Halie Looper and Paul Rosenberg, this show is a STEAL at only $10 (live professional theater at only $10…Hell yes!) plus you have the added advantage of being in the lovely Greenwood neighborhood of North Seattle and you can eat/drink at one of their many fine bars or restaurants before or after the show!
(We suggest the Gainsbourg for finer food/drink or the institution known as the Baranof if you like your drinks strong and the company eccentric and alcoholic…)
We think it’s well worth the trip to check out this show. Tickets HERE!
