Well?
Did it?
Inquiring minds have been frothing for MONTHS while they impatiently wait for television cable network giant LOGO to announce the cast for Season 8 of the somewhat beloved reality drag competition show, “RuPaul’s Drag Race”. The show, produced by Los Angeles based production company World of Wonder is, of course, co-produced and stars legendary drag superstar, RuPaul and usually features a dozen or so drag performers from around the U.S. competing to be crowned “America’s Next Drag Superstar”. The campy show helped revived the art of Drag and has propelled a couple dozen drag performers into the national spotlight, including Seattle’s own Jinkx Monsoon (winner of Season Five) and Season Six runner up, BenDeLaCreme.
Logo announced today via their subsidiary media outlet, NewNowNext, that the cast for Season 8 would finally be announced on February 1, 2016 during the airing of the “NewNowNext Awards” special on LOGO TV. This year’s awards are being taped in Aspen, Colorado during Aspen Gay Ski Week and beloved comedian Margaret Cho will host.
Fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race will get their first chance to meet the queens of Season 8 during the New Now Next Honors, February 1 at 10pm on Logo.
The veil will be lifted with a series of videos starring this year’s contenders, introduced byDrag Race favorites Katya, Ginger Minj, Shangela and Ivy Winters at Aspen Gay Ski Week.
“This season’s queens are the most twisted yet,” declared RuPaul. “I fell in love with them the first moment we met, and I can’t wait to unleash these crazy and talented bitches onto the world.”
Logo also announced that Grammy nominee Meghan Trainor will perform during the show, where she’ll be joined by out pop star Who Is Fancy.
All we can say is…FINALLY!!!
They usually announce the cast in Nov/Dec and the show USUALLY starts airing late Jan/early February. We’re guessing that LOGO announced late in order to stir up interest in a rapidly aging franchise? The show still gets strong ratings (well, strong for a fringe network like LOGO…) but it HAS lost its “coolness” factor. Especially after last year’s boring/dreary season. Plus, there’s over a 100 Drag Race “girls” now. It has lost its cache.
We haven’t seen any word on WHEN the new season actually starts…we’ve heard it will be early March through the Gossip Vine.
AND, will our own ROBBIE TURNER be in this year’s cast? It’s been speculated for MONTH…largely due to the fact we’ve endlessly written about it….and, the fact she clumsily faked a lame excuse (ankle breakage) two days before filming started in Los Angeles then oddly disappeared for several weeks only to reappear publicly two days or so after filming ended.
Regardless, we hope her ankle is ok!
