Now, let’s hear what our contestant has to say…Werk it, Stacy!
Stacy Layne Matthews, where are you from?
I’m from North Carolina, and I live in a small community outside of Lumberton called Back Swamp. It’s a small place on the map but I am surrounded by a lot of family.
When was your first time in drag and what did it feel like?
The first time I did drag it was kind of weird but I didn’t feel like myself when I looked in the mirror. I got used to it really quickly and it became a passion for me, and I haven’t stopped since.
What makes you continue to perform and represent your community as a drag queen?
The one thing that makes me keep going is the fact that I love to perform and entertain. I love being surrounded by people who love music…. who love live performers and people who have a passion for female impersonation just like I do….
What was your first reaction when you heard the news on becoming a RPDR contestant?
My first reaction was THANK YOU JESUS! I have been working so hard in my clubs and bars here in North Carolina for so long that I felt like it was time I got MY big break. I am running full force with it, “Thanks to RuPaul!”
How much tension was there in the hotel during the shooting of the show and were fremenies made?
There wasn’t much tension for me because I was so tired and focused on the things that I needed to do. Rest was important but I didn’t get much of that, but I was there to compete. Frenemies were easy to make because we were all after the same thing.
If you learned something from this show, what would that be?
Being on the show has taught me so much about myself that I didn’t know. It has helped me to improve my makeup skills and to learn different techniques from the other girls. It has also helped me to stop second guessing a lot of the things that I do as a performer.
If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three items would you absolutely need with you in order to survive? Lots of grapefruit juice, a BIG juicy cheeseburger and a drag bag with all the drag essentials. Three things are pretty hard because I would also need a man too!
Pick one – Lady Gaga or Cher?
Well, I like to keep it current and even though Cher is amazing, I think Lady GaGa has made her mark in the music industry already as a performer. She is amazing!
