Hollywood has some new beefcake. Mexican singer/actor Diego González Boneta has just been signed to star as Drew, the lead character in the film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, Rock of Ages. The jukebox musical features hit rock songs of the Eighties, and the role was originally played by American Idol runner-up Constantine Maroulis who received a Tony Award nomination for his portrayal. The film, to be directed by Hairspray director Adam Shankman, has already cast Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, and Mary J. Blige in supporting roles, and Dancing with the Stars dancer and singer Julianne Hough as the female lead, Sherry.
Boneta is best known in the US for turns on 90210 and the ABC Family series Pretty Little Liars and a Spanish language pop singing career in Mexico and stints on telenovelas. The 20 year old actor seems poised for some serious stardom…he’s got the teeth (and body) for it. It’ll be a year before we find out….Rock of Ages has a release date of June 1, 2012. (By then, the young actor can legally drink at the numerous premieres he’ll have to attend around the globe…)
Of course, are people going to go see a film that features Tom Cruise and Alec Baldwin in singing roles? Neither can sing and Cruise is not only too old to play the role of Stacee Jaxx, he’s not much of a movie star anymore. May Xenu help him…
