Untucked with Brian: A “Heather” returns, briefly, to strut her stuff…

April 5, 2011• bySeattle Gay Scene

Ms Cho (surprisingly subdued as a judge) and the lovely RuPaul Charles.

If you are one of the very few who read this column, then you know how annoyed we most likely were when out struts through the door at the top of the episode but Carmen Carrera (I know for a fact, Strangeways was not a fan of this), but hold on tight girly-boys it only lasts for a nano-second.The girls must turn a straight jock into their drag queen sisters. But first, let’s talk about what was going through the judges minds when deciding who to bring back: Carmen Carrera. Why? There were a couple of other queens that could have made a bigger impact on this twist of the show, such as Venus or Phoenix, or even Shangela or Stacy Layne Matthews. But alas, they bring back the queen who relies heavily on her body and not too much on her brains (that’s okay, Carmen, we still love you here in Seattle!).

The name of the game is ‘Dunk that queen’ and poor, poor Carmen Carrera got dunked more than once tonight – well more than once and in so many ways. The queen who dunked another the most was Alexis Mateo! You go girl! So her prize for winning the mini challenge is the privilege to pair a jock with a queen and she saves the best for last for herself: the secretly closeted jock, am I right? Not only do these girls need to make their jock drag queens but their sista drag queen, while teaching them a cheer about safe sex, teach them to walk in heels and show them the ways of femininity. This sounds all too familiar – can RuPaul come up with challenges that are ‘out of the box’? Just asking!

Alexis Mateo choose a closeted bi-sexual to transform - this picture tells a thousand words!

For the cheers presentation on the runway I was unimpressed with the quality that these drag queens tried to bring to the stage – none delivered! After the game, it was time for half time in their fashion struts along with the newly formed drag sisters for the judges – and the special guests this week were (FINALLY!) Margaret Cho and Sharon Osborne. My favorites were Alexis Mateo and her sister, and Yara Sofia and her sister. The rest did not make the cut on my game board.

Margaret Cho and Michelle Visage deliver critique to the queens. We LOVE Margaret Cho!!!

In the bottom two were Raja Sutan Gemini and Carmen Carrera and Raja kicked Carmen’s butt sending her home to play a different sport among the spectators. What was revealed in the Interior’s lounge during the elimination? Alexis’s sister might actually be a closeted bisexual (not surprising at all for a jock originally from Europe). Raja was quite emotional after RuPaul asks her to stay and sends Carmen back home (returned and exited all in one episode, what was the point in that? Come on!). This leaves, again, four queens left fighting for the title of the 3rd America’s Next Drag Superstar. What drama and surprises do the queens have in stored for us next week? Let this simmer in your minds for one week and let’s talk shop talk in seven days.

Strangeways Note: Loved, loved, LOVED this episode! Even Carmen’s return didn’t bother me that much… But, I will point out that in some ways, this wasn’t a very fair challenge. If they do this again, then Ru needs to make sure that all the jocks are SIMILAR in build. It’s a lot easier to drag up a thin, lean athlete, than a large burly one…(though I have to also say that both Carmen and Raja did drop the ball on how they presented their beefy boys. Carment should NOT have done the “Body” routine on her jock, and Raja did a surprisingly bad job in making up her dude, who was very sweet and game. Also, poor Yara got stuck with the dud of the bunch, but did an amazing job with his make-up; they just didn’t have any rapport.)

And, “Untucked” was even better…very funny and sweet for a change. (I don’t think Alexis’s man was necessarily bi…it could have just been a young man who knew what made, “Good TV”…)

AND, all of those jocks were either hot, or sweet, or both….like delicious tarts fresh out of the oven. YUM!

Oh, and we have note that it was pretty funny that ALL three contestants that are either FROM Puerto Rico, or of Puerto Rican descent, could throw a baseball, (during the pool dunk mini-challenge). The island, (and other Caribbean countries like Cuba and the Dominican Republic) are famous for producing great baseball players…apparently, this even extends to queens.

Best episode this season.

Raja worked the lip sync and sent her sister Heather Carmen home!
