Seattle’s Gender Justice League has a big announcement about this year’s TRANS* PRIDE SEATTLE event: activist CeCe McDonald will give the keynote address at the rally on Friday, June 27, 2014 at Cal Anderson Park.
More from the GJL announcement:
WE PROUDLY WELCOME TRANSGENDER ACTIVIST CeCe McDonald as keynote for Trans* Pride Seattle 2014! #tps14
CeCe McDonald served 19 months in prison for defending herself from a group of people who violently attacked her. Arrested for using deadly force, she faced up to 80 years in prison. CeCe took a plea deal that sentenced her to 41 months. To supporters, she was jailed for defending herself against the bigotry and violence that trans people often face and that is so rarely punished. CeCe’s case elicited an international groundswell of support among social justice activists and trans youth. Her case helped shed a national spotlight on the violence and discrimination faced by transgender women of color and incarceration. Now, she uses her story to activate us all for liberation – confronting race, transgender experiences, sexism, incarceration and more, frequently alongside Laverne Cox, Orange is the New Black, and Janet Mock, Redefining Realness.
We are proud of have CeCe join us for Trans* Pride as our keynote to highlight how transgender people are targeted with racist violence and incarceration.
