It’s a good get…Hedgebrook, the Washington based writing collective that offers residencies and support for women writers of all genres of literature, is having its annual fundraiser EQUIVOX on Sunday March 18th at Herban Feast in Sodo and they’ve just announced a major guest for this year’s shindig. It’s mega hyphenate DANAI GURIRA who is currently VERY hot right now due to her major co-starring role in the big movie of the moment, Black Panther where she plays fierce Wakanda warrior Okoye, but is also equally known as another fierce warrior, Michonne in the very popular AMC television series The Walking Dead.
But, theater nerds also recognize the actress as the playwright of Eclipsed, the highly acclaimed play about 5 women in war torn Liberia during the 2005 revolution there, which had successful runs in New York in 2015/2016. Danai is an alumna of Hedgebrook writing programs and returns to support the group at this year’s gala event.
Danai is one busy lady.
She will also be joined by writer/historian Annette Gordon-Reed and playwright Sarah Ruhl, best known for In The Next Room (or the Vibrator Play).
You can grab tickets here but we’re guessing the presence of Danai Gurira will result in them very quickly selling out so you best snag them quickly.
Note that this is a BRUNCH event happening in the daytime…such a clever idea for a fundraiser which tend to be too frequently, bad dinners with rubber chicken and dessert dashes.
If you can’t attend, support www.Hedgebrook.org with a donation!
ADDED: I forgot to mention that Danai’s play FAMILIAR is being staged at Seattle Rep starting April 27th! Tickets to that production can be found HERE!
