Dinner and a Movie

February 16, 2011• bySeattle Gay Scene

Two for the Road (1967 film)

I was thinking of a romantic film to watch for two people. Several come to mind but Two for the Road stands out. I think because in February the weather starts to get a bit warmer and I start to think of road trips. This movie also has Audrey Hepburn one of my favorite Actresses. She is in high fashion through most of the movie and of course they go around the country in all sorts of classic cars. I love it.

Two for the Road an American film directed by Stanley Donen about the twelve-year relationship between an architect (Albert Finney) and his wife (Audrey Hepburn). The movie was considered somewhat experimental for its time because the story is told in a non-linear fashion, with scenes from the latter stages of the relationship juxtaposed with those from its beginning. The movie often leaves the viewer to assume what has happened to the couple, which is sometimes revealed in later scenes. If you love Audrey Hepburn in high fashion and road trips you will like this film. The story largely takes place in France, with the central focus of each part being that the couple is traveling to the South of France on a road trip.

The film’s theme song, Two for the Road, was composed by Henry Mancini. Mancini, who composed many famous theme songs for films, including Moon River for Breakfast at Tiffany’s, considered Two for the Road his favorite song.

I love the cars featured in the film driven by the couple. They include an MG TD, a Mercedes-Benz 230SL, a Triumph Herald, a VW Microbus and a Ford Country Squire. So if you get a chance to check it out. Make your dinner for two and settle in to a romantic even of cuddling and movies.

Shrimp Creole

3/4 cup chopped Onion
1 clove garlic, pressed or minced
1 medium green pepper, finely chopped
1/2 cup finely chopped celery
2 tbsp. butter
1 can (8oz) tomato sauce
1/2 cup water
1 bay leaf, crushed
1 tsp minced fresh parsley
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1 pkg (7oz) frozen shrimp, thawed

In medium skillet, saute onion, garlic, green pepper, and celery in butter about 5 min.  or until tender.  Remove from heat; stir in tomato sauce, water, bay leaf, parsley, salt, and pepper.  Simmer 10 min.  Add additional water, if needed.  Add thawed shrimp.  Bring mixture to a boil; cook covered over medium heat 5 min.  Serve Shrimp Creole over rice.  2 generous servings.
