Men in toe shoes…doing ballet…playing the female roles!
We swoon!
Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, the 39 year old all male “drag” ballet company has been delighting audiences since the Ford Administration and the beloved company is headed to the University of Washington’s Meany Hall for three performances, May 16-18, 2013. Get tickets here.
For those unaware, Les Ballets Trockadero isn’t a “joke” or cast with comic drag queens mimicking ballet moves. All the dancers are highly trained professionals but Trockadero is definitely light hearted…it’s a gentle parody of all things cliche about the ballet. And, since ballet is one of the few fields where men get the short end of the stick…the big classic ballets and star roles are about the ballerinas, it’s a rare opportunity to see men tackle women’s roles. Some of the pieces set for the Meany Hall show will include Swan Lake and Walpurgisnacht. We have our fingers crossed that there will be at least one reference to the film, “Black Swan”…
And, frankly, for the gay mens and the ladies who enjoy ogling the men of ballet in their form fitting tights, it’s a special treat to see an entire show of sinewy athletic artists and their amazingly taut and curvy booties rippling with muscular exertion. Of course, the downside to men playing the lady roles…the tutus cover up their “swimsuit zone”.
