So this week’s episode of “Smash” left me cold. The plot advanced, characters were further developed but the episode was basically like my ex: dull and not so sexy.
Julia’s affair was exposed, Frank moved out after lots of angry yelling and punching Michael. Ivy had a minor meltdown, making an ass of herself by falling onstage after drinking and taking pills (back off on the method acting Ivy, you don’t have to be Marilyn to play her), Karen booked a national commercial and sings a drunken song with Ivy (stupid), Ellis fucked some movie star’s male agent (this should have been way sexier than it was) to secure the star for Eileen, Tom found out his BF is a Republican and is upset(original, oh wait it’s not) and is maybe going to fuck Ivy’s butch chorus gal pal, and blah, blah, blah.
Here is my major problem with “Smash.” They aren’t taking any real risks with the characters or plot. None of these characters seems to have anything on the line. There is no, to quote Billy Flynn, Razzle Dazzle. The only real emotion in this episode came from the marriage drama and that was cliché, at best.
Pull it together, SMASH!!! Give us some real emotion, risk and drama. GIVE IT TO US!!!!
