Seattle Writer Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore Wins Lambda Award

Seattle writer MATTILDA BERNSTEIN SYCAMORE wins a Lambda Award for her memoir, THE END OF SAN FRANCISCO.

The prestigious LGBTQ literary awards, “The Lammys”, or more formally, the “26th Annual Lambda Literary Awards” were presented in NYC’s Cooper Union last night and the winners included Seattle writer, Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore who won in the “Transgender Non-Fiction” category for her book, The End of San Francisco. Her response on her Facebook page:

I had no idea I would get so emotional about this—I just won a Lambda Literary Award, and I can’t stop sobbing!!! Congrats to all the other finalists and winners, and thanks to the judges in Transgender Nonfiction for believing in transgender as a category that extends, bends, mends and transcends!!!

The End of San Francisco is “part memoir, part social history, and part elegy” and explores a period of time where Sycamore moved to San Francisco in search of a radical queer community and the ultimate disappointment at the discovery that the San Francisco of today was far different from the San Francisco of 20 years ago. Or, as City Lights describes it: “A budding queer activist escapes to San Francisco, in search of a world more politically charged, sexually saturated, and ethically consistent—this is the person who evolves into Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore, infamous radical queer troublemaker, organizer and agitator, community builder, and anti-assimilationist commentator.
